The Amaze diesel has been officially taken off Honda Cars India’s official website. It was the last subcompact sedan with a diesel model on offer after its rivals like the Tata Tigor, Hyundai Aura and Maruti Suzuki Dzire migrated to petrol and CNG powertrains.
As expected, the primary reason the Amaze diesel is getting dropped from the lineup is the upcoming RDE (Real Driving Emissions) norms in India from April 2023. Upgrading the powertrain to meet the new stricter emission standards is very expensive, which paired with the already low diesel sales in the segment, continuing with the Amaze diesel made little business sense for the automaker.
This leaves only two diesel-powered Honda models on sale in India, the WR-V and the 5th-Gen City. However, these models too will be discontinued as the brand has stated that it will stop producing diesel engines from February 2023. Honda introduced its 1.5-litre diesel motor in India with the Amaze, pumping out 100 bhp with 200 Nm of peak torque when paired to the 5-speed manual or 80 bhp with 160 Nm of peak torque if mated to the CVT automatic gearbox. The latter made the Amaze the only subcompact sedan to be offered with a diesel automatic option.
The New Honda Amaze is now being offered with a single petrol powertrain. The 1.2-litre i-VTEC motor makes 90 bhp with 110 Nm of peak torque and can be mated to either a 5-speed manual or a CVT automatic transmission. Prices for the Amaze start from Rs 6.89 lakh and go all the way up to Rs 9.48 lakh (ex-showroom).
The Japanese automaker recently dropped the first teaser for its upcoming SUV, which is expected to be unveiled by mid-2023. As per reports, the All-New Honda SUV is slated for the 2023 festive season launch.
