Toyota Corolla Cross project is back on the table Launch expected by late 2028 To be produced at Toyota's upcoming Aurangabad facility
Japanese automaker, Toyota is preparing to launch multiple new models including the FJ Cruiser, next-gen Fortuner, a new electric MPV and a low-cost HyCross in the Indian market. A new media report claims that the company will also launch the Corolla Cross SUV in the Indian market. The SUV was earlier planned to be launched in our market as a 7-seater SUV, but the project was shelved as it did not meet the technical commercial viability.
The report claims that the project is now back on the table. It is expected that the Toyota Corolla Cross will be the first model to roll out from the company’s upcoming Aurangabad facility. The SUV is expected to be launched by late 2028 or early 2029.
Earlier, the SUV was planned as a 7-seater model to take on the likes of the Hyundai Alcazar, Mahindra XUV 700 and Tata Safari. The existing model is based on the TNGA-C platform that also underpins the Innova Hycross; however, the later has a wheelbase of 2850 and the Corolla Cross has a wheelbase of 2640mm. It is expected that the new SUV’s wheelbase will be increased by around 150mm, which will allow Toyota to add third-row seat.
The new model will most likely to be offered with a strong hybrid powertrain, which is also available with the Innova Hycross. It is expected to get a 2.0L strong hybrid engine that offers 184hp and a 206Nm of electric boost.
The Japanese automaker will discontinue the Innova Crysta in early 2027. To cater the fleet operators, the company will launch a lower-spec Innova Hycross in 2027. This model is expected to be equipped with less features compared to the existing model to keep costs relatively low. The company could also introduce the flex-fuel version of the Innova Hycross, which was showcased at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Expo. This version is capable of running on ethanol blends higher than 20 percent.
Toyota is also preparing an all-new electric MPV, which will be based on the upcoming Maruti three-row electric MPV (Codenamed YMC). It will take open the likes of the BYD eMAX 7, VinFast VF MPV 7 and the Kia Carens Clavis EV. The company will also launch the new FJ Cruiser off-roader in our market by 2028. Moreover, Toyota is working on the third-generation Fortuner, which is likely to be offered with the 2.8L diesel engine with a mild-hybrid tech.
