Tata Motors has officially announced to launch 7 new nameplates, including the Sierra and Avinya before the end of FY30. Adding to it, the popular Nexon, Safari and Harrier will also receive generation update. If media reports are to be believed, Tata Motors has started working on the next-generation Harrier and Safari.
The next-generation Harrier and new-gen Safari, internally called Taurus and Leo, respectively, will be based on a new architecture, which will be compatible with multiple powertrains. Adding to it, both SUVs will come with all-wheel-drive set-up.
It was speculated that Tata Motors will introduce the next-gen Nexon in 2027, and the next Harrier and Safari in 2028. A new media report claims that the new-gen SUVs will go on sale in the country in 2027.
The current Tata Harrier and Safari are based on Tata’s OMEGA architecture, which is basically a modified version of Land Rover’s D8 platform. This platform comes with multiple limitations, as it is not compatible with all-wheel-drive system in ICE form.
In order to address this issue, Tata Motors will introduce an all-new flexible architecture which will be compatible with AWD setup. The next-gen Harrier and Safari will be based on the new flexible architecture, which will be compatible with multiple powertrain choices including ICE and electric.
The report claims that the next-gen Harrier and Safari will grow in size. The length will be increased by around 100-200mm, which should help Tata engineers to create more space inside the cabin. The three-row Tata Safari will have more space in the third-row. Tata Motors has also joined hands with Desay to develop next-gen architecture to offer latest infotainment and autonomous systems.
The new SUVs will be offered with both ICE and Electric powertrains. The ICE version will get the 1.5-litre turbo petrol and 2.0L turbo diesel engine. Tata has recently acquired the licensing rights to develop the 2.0L oil burner in-house. The new SUVs could get the more powerful iteration of this powertrain.
