Tata Motors sold 80,304 units, an 11% YoY decline in domestic sales. Tata’s EV sales fell 13% YoY, with JSW MG closing the gap. CV sales remain steady at 31,998 units, with strong HCV & SCV performance. The Harrier EV will debut in March 2025; Sierra SUV launch by festive season.
Tata Motors registered total sales of 80,304 vehicles in the domestic and international markets for January 2025 as opposed to 86,125 units in the same month last year. With domestic sales of 48,075 units, the OEM witnessed a YoY sales decline of 11 percent. The Nexon remained the top-seller (15,397 units), followed by the Punch (16,231 units) and Tiago (6,807 units). However, sales of the Nexon and Punch declined on YoY basis by 10 percent.
The home-grown automaker also witnessed a 13 percent YoY decline in the EV sales. Tata’s EV sales stood at 5,037 units against 5,790 units in January 2024. JSW MG Motor India with its latest offering Windsor EV, along with the Comet EV and ZS EV, is giving a tough fight to Tata. The company managed to retail 4,225 units of electric vehicles in January 2025, which is just 812 units fewer than Tata.
In the commercial vehicle segment, the indigenous automaker posted total sales of 31,998 units compared to the 32,092 units in January, 2024. The carmaker manged to sell 8,990 HCV trucks, 5,298 ILMCV trucks, 4,582 passenger carriers, 11,213 SCV cargo and pickup, 30,082 CV domestic and 1,905 CV IB.
The home-grown automaker has an aggressive electrification strategy for the Indian market. Currently, Tata enjoys over 70 percent market share in the Indian passenger EV segment with models like Nexon EV, Punch EV, Tiago EV and Tigor EV. This year, the company will introduce the much-awaited Harrier EV and the all-new Sierra SUV with three powertrains – petrol, diesel and electric. Both models were showcased in their production avatars at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Show in January.
The Tata Harrier EV is likely to hit showrooms in March, 2025. The electric SUV is expected to come with two electric motor and multiple battery pack options. The AWD system will also be on offer. It is expected to offer a range of around 500km on a single charge.
The Tata Sierra is certainly one of the biggest car launches of this year. The model is likely to debut near around 2025 festive season. The SUV’s petrol and diesel versions are expected to feature a 1.5L, 4-cylinder turbo and 2.0L, 4-cylinder engines, respectively. While the petrol motor is good for 170PS and 280Nm, the diesel unit produces 170PS and 350Nm. Details of the Sierra EV are still under the wraps. However, it is likely to come with larger battery packs, offering an estimated range of over 500km.
