Volkswagen's new Tera SUV is making waves after its unveiling at the 2025 Rio Carnival. Recently, the Tera has been spotted on road tests in the open, revealing a new, lower-cost variant. This lower-cost model provides us with a glimpse of what the base Tera might have to offer.
The Tera SUV has been seen in several different forms, the most recent spotting a simpler version. Unlike the more expensive model shown at the Sambadrome, the version lacks more luxury amenities. The prototype was seen driving around Ubatuba on Sao Paulo's northern coast. It looked different with the smaller wheels and lack of chrome accents.
The test vehicle seen sported smaller wheels than the 17-inch alloy wheels on the top-of-the-line version. It possessed 15-inch rims, however, with hubcaps fitted. The absence of chrome trim also suggests that this is a lower-spec version. This version will probably be based on the same underlying design as the top-end versions but with some adjustments to save money.
The prototype is observed to be powered by a naturally aspirated engine. This likely means that it uses the same 1.0-litre MPI three-cylinder engine from other Volkswagen vehicles. This engine delivers 84 horsepower. It should be paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. This is consistent with the base model Polo, which also uses identical darkened hubcaps.
Although it is the lower-priced variant, the base model of Tera still keeps some of the higher-end trims' styling cues. The SUV will still have LED lights, including daylights running lights that give it a clear front signature. The car also still has a chrome strip along the front and joining the two headlights, which gives it a touch of class even at base trim.
The new Volkswagen Tera will be smaller than vehicles like the T-Cross and Nivus. It will be around 4 meters long, with a wheelbase of 2,566 mm. The Fiat Pulse, as a comparison, has a wheelbase of 2,532 mm, while the Renault Kardian has a wheelbase of 2,604 mm. The reduced size will be set to make the Tera more agile and maneuverable in urban environments.
With this new base model, Volkswagen aims to set the price of the Tera such that more consumers can purchase it. With its lower price tag, the SUV will become more affordable, emulating the strategy of Citroen with Basalt. This might make the Tera a much-coveted vehicle in the market, with consumers looking for an affordable, stylish, and functional SUV.
