The micro-SUV category in India is a relatively new segment. Currently, there are only 1 vehicle in it, the Tata Punch which created it. Now, Hyundai will be entering this segment next month with the new Exter. But what makes it stand apart from the others? Here are the top 5 things you need to know about the Exter.
The upcoming Hyundai Exter features a clean-sheet design that is based on the company’s ‘Sensuous Sportiness’ philosophy. The front end gets a wide grille flanked by the projector headlights while the ‘H’ themed LED headlights sit just above.
In profile, the flared wheelarches and roof rails paired with the upright and squared-off design makes the Exter seem larger than it actually is. At the rear, it features H-shaped LED taillights that are connected by a full-width black bar with textured finish.
Hyundai’s new logo is positioned at the centre of the contrasting trim while the bumper gets a big faux aluminium skid plate.
Moving inside, the 2023 Exter’s cabinet is familiar to the recently launched Hyundai Aura and Hyundai Grand i10 NIOS. The new four-wheeler will share parts like the steering wheel, infotainment unit and AC controls with other company models.
However, the micro-SUV will get a different interior colour theme and there’s a new brushed-aluminium trim on the dashboard as well.
The Exter will also come loaded with features like a fully-digital instrument cluster, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, connected car tech, multiple language support, wireless charging, voice operated electric sunroof, auto climate control, reset parking camera with sensors, and more. It will also become the first vehicle in the segment to get a factory-fitted dashcam.

Hyundai Motors will offer both petrol and CNG powertrain options with the new Exter. Both are 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated units. The petrol makes 82 bhp with 115 Nm of max torque while the CNG variants pump out 69 bhp with 95 Nm of peak torque. Transmission options include a 5-speed manual and an AMT gearbox. The Exter will also be the first Hyundai SUV that will not be offered with a diesel powertrain.
The Exter will be unveiled in India on July 10. While Hyundai is yet to reveal the prices, expect the micro-SUV to be priced somewhere between Rs 6 lakh (ex-showroom) - Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom).
Upon launch, the Exter will compete against the likes of the Tata Punch, Maruti Ignis, and the Citroen C3 in the Indian market.
MG Hector petrol variants now E20 fuel compatible; 2025 model launched with no price hike, meeting new emission norms and supporting sustainable mobility.
