MG Starlight 560 EV Spotted Charging – India Launch On the Cards?

MG’s new PHEV SUV to debut in India on July 16. Its EV variant might also make its way to India, delivering range of 500km.

MG’s ‘new energy vehicle’ is set to make its India debut on July 16, 2026. While the carmaker has remained tight-lipped about the product’s name and details, it’s widely expected to be a rebadged version of the Wuling Starlight 560 plug-in hybrid SUV sold in China. In fact, MG filed a design patent for the Starlight 560 in India earlier this year. In China, Wuling Starlight 560 is available with PHEV (plug-in hybrid) and electric powertrain options.

Recently, a test of the Starlight 560 EV was caught on camera at a public charging station, suggesting that the pure electric vehicle might also be under consideration for the Indian market. While the model was heavily camouflaged, visible design highlights included a blanked-off grille, air curtains on the front bumper, dual LED DRLs, blacked-out B-pillars, multi-spoke alloy wheels, a charging port on the left rear fender, LED taillamps and rear disc brakes.

The Chinese-spec Wuling Starlight 560 EV features a 56.7kWh LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery pack and a front-axle-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor generating power worth 134bhp and 200Nm of torque. It does 0 to 100kmph in 13 seconds and offers a top speed of 160kmph. The SUV delivers a CLTC-certified driving range of 500km on a single charge.

The Starlight 560 EV supports both AC and DC fast charging. It takes around 9.2 hours to charge fully via an AC fast charger, while a DC fast charger can juice up the battery from 30% to 80% in just 20 minutes. The SUV comes equipped with MacPherson strut independent front and multi-link independent rear suspension.

Similar to its Chinese counterpart, the MG Starlight 560 PHEV is likely to feature a 1.5L naturally aspirated Atkinson cycle petrol engine paired with a front-mounted electric motor and a 20.5kWh LFP battery pack. It offers a combined power output of 197bhp and 230Nm of torque. The PHEV version accelerates 0 to 100kmph in 9.7 seconds, and has an electronic speed limit of 170kmph. It offers an electric-only range of 100km and a combined range of around 1,100km with its 52-litre fuel tank.

In China, the Wuling Starlight 560 is also available with a 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine option. This motor produces a maximum power of 174bhp and 260Nm (MT)/290 (CVT) of torque. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual and a CVT automatic gearbox. However, the pure petrol version is unlikely to launch in India.
