In order to improve sales, Tata Motors is planning to introduce multiple new models including new SUVs and facelifts of existing SUVs. Moreover, the homegrown UV maker will officially introduce the new 1.5L 4-cylinder turbo petrol engine in its SUV line-up. This engine was revealed recently at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Global Expo.
The Tata Sierra will be the first model to get this powertrain option. In fact, testing of the new-gen Sierra SUV has already been started on the Indian roads. The SUV will come with both ICE and EV powertrains. The ICE version will be offered with two engine options including a 1.5L turbocharged petrol and a Stellantis-sourced 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine.

The new 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine is capable of producing 168bhp of power and 280NM of torque. This makes it one of the most powerful engine in its category. The Sierra diesel engine is the same that powers the Harrier and Safari. This powertrain is capable of producing 168bhp and 350Nm of torque.
The petrol engine will be paired to a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic unit. On the other hand, the diesel engine will be paired to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque convertor automatic unit.
Details about the electric Sierra are yet to be revealed, but it will come with a dual-motor AWD setup. The Sierra EV is expected to share the battery pack and electric motor with the soon-to-be-launched Harrier electric.
If reports are to be believed, the Harrier EV will come with a 75kWh battery pack along with a dual-motor AWD setup. A front-axle-mounted electric model will be offered as standard. The SUV should offer a certified range of over 500km in a single charge. It is expected that the Sierra electric will also get the same battery pack.
The Tata Harrier and Safari are currently available with a single 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel engine paired to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox. In fact, the direct rivals of these two Tata SUVs are available with multiple engine options. Both Harrier and Tata Safari will receive the new 1.5L turbo petrol engine with manual and dual-clutch automatic gearbox options. Launch could happen towards the end of this year.
