It was reported that Toyota will launch the new mid-sized SUV, rumoured to be called the Land Cruiser FJ or the FJ Cruiser, in the global markets by mid-2025. However, a new media report reveals that the new mini Fortuner won't go on sale in the country this year. It is expected that the new FJ Cruiser launch could take place in 2026.
It is reported that the new Land Cruiser FJ will be positioned below the Fortuner SUV in select international markets. The next-gen Toyota Fortuner is reportedly to be based on the new TNGA-F platform and will go premium and expensive than the outgoing model. This will leave enough space for Toyota to position the new SUV in the fast growing 7-seater premium SUV category.
Toyota is also working on a 7-seater derivative of the Urban Cruiser Hyryder, which will be launched in our market in 2025-26. The new Land Cruiser FJ is likely to be positioned between the 3-row Hyryder and the next-gen Fortuner SUV. Previous reports reveal that the new mid-sized SUV could be based on Toyota's new IMV O platform that also underpins the Hilux Champ. This is a low cost platform, which will allow Toyota to position the new SUV more competitively in the market. For reference, the Land Cruiser 300 and Land Cruiser 250 are based on the Toyota GA-F architecture.
Toyota had teased the Compact Cruiser EV concept in 2021. The mini Toyota Land Cruiser is expected to measure around 4.5m to 4.6m in length with a wheelbase of around 2.7 meters. It is expected that the upcoming compact off-roader will come with both internal combustion and hybrid powertrains along with an electric derivative at a later stage.
It is expected that the Toyota FJ Cruiser will receive a naturally aspirated 2.7-litre, 4-cylinder 2TR-FE petrol engine that produces 161bhp and 246Nm of torque. It is paired to a 6-speed automatic gearbox, which sends power to all-4 wheels via Toyota's 4WD system. Other engine choices could include a 169hp, 2.0L inline 4-cylinder engine, a 203hp, 2.5L four-cylinder engine, and a 2.5L 4-cylinder petrol-hybrid engine that produces 194hp. The plug-in hybrid version produces 220hp.
It is expected that the new FJ Cruiser or Land Cruiser FJ could also be launched in the Indian market. The SUV could get the same 200bhp, 2.0L turbocharged diesel engine that powers the Fortuner. Adding to it, the Japanese brand could also use the 2.8L petrol-hybrid engine that powers the Innova Hycross.
