We informed you earlier that Maruti Suzuki is evaluating a new premium SUV, which will measure above 4.5 meters in length. The new SUV is most likely to be the 7-seater Grand Vitara, which was caught testing earlier this year. The 7-seater Maruti premium SUV will rival the likes of the Mahindra XUV700 and Tata Safari.
After long domination over mass-market cars, Maruti Suzuki is now aiming to dominate the mid-sized and premium SUV category. In the mid-sized SUV category, Maruti Suzuki has launched the Victoris to challenge the dominance of Hyundai Creta. The Korean SUV accounts for over 30 percent of total sales in the mid-sized category.
Maruti Suzuki has no presence in the premium SUV category, measuring above 4.5 meters. And, this segment is dominated by Mahindra with XUV700 and Scorpio. On the sidelines of Maruti Victoris reveal, Hisashi Takeuchi, MD & CEO Maruti Suzuki confirms that we are evaluating a new premium SUV longer than 4.5 meters.
The new Maruti 7-seater SUV is likely to be based on Suzuki’s Global-C platform that underpins the Grand Vitara, Victoris and Brezza. The platform will be heavily modified to accommodate a longer wheelbase and a third-row seat. It will come with all-new design with significant changes compared to the Grand Vitara.
The premium SUV is likely to be launched sometime in 2026-27. It will take on the likes of the Hyundai Alcazar, Tata Safari and Mahindra XUV700. The new Maruti SUV is expected to be offered with a 1.5L NA petrol and a Toyota-sourced 1.5L TNGA hybrid engine. We believe that MSIL could use partnership with Toyota to utilise the 2.0L hybrid powertrain that powers the Innova Hycross.
