BYD (Build Your Dreams), the renowned Chinese EV manufacturer, showcased the Atto 2 compact electric SUV at the Brussels Motor Show in Belgium. It’s a budget-friendly EV that will go on sale in the European and UK markets in February, 2025. As of now, there is no official word on its India launch. However, the BYD Atto 2 is expected to make its way here to challenge the EVs like Hyundai Creta Electric and Maruti e Vitara. It’s essentially the rebadged version of the BYD’s Yuan Up compact EV, which was introduced in China early last year.
The BYD Atto 2 underpins the brand’s e-Platform 3.0, which is claimed to be “safer, more efficient, smarter.” This architecture was introduced as an 8-in-1 system featuring the electric motor, high efficiency reducers, silicon carbide electronic controls, DC converter, intelligent boost modules and battery manager. The Atto 2 uses the Cell-to-Body (CTB) construction, which is said to integrate the battery pack as an integral part of the vehicle, increase frontal collision safety and regional body strength.
This new BYD electric compact SUV features a 45.1kWh Blade Cell battery pack and a front-axle mounted electric motor generating power worth 176bhp. This setup delivers a claimed range of 312km (WLTP). The carmaker has confirmed that the BYD Atto 2 with bigger battery pack will arrive in coming months.
Dimensionally, the Atto 2 measures 4,310mm in length, 1,830mm in width and 1,675mm in height. Compared to the Atto 3, this compact EV is nearly 145mm shorter and 45mm slimmer. It comes with cargo volume of 400-litres, which increases to 1,430-litres with the rear seat down. Some of its design elements are borrowed from the Atto 3 such as sporty black cladding, a floating roofline and LED headlamps. The silver accents on the pull-type door handles, cladding and faux diffuser add more to its looks. At the back, the EV sports a full-width light bar connecting the taillamps.
The BYD Atto 2 has 5-seats arrangement with features such as all-black seat upholstery, a rotatable 15.6-inch touchscreen, a digital driver’s display, Type C charging ports, ambient lighting and more. Its centre console has an armrest and cupholders.
Seeing the growing demand for hybrid cars, popular mass-market car manufacturers like Kia, Hyundai, Mahindra and Renault are planning to launch hybrid SUVs in India.
