Event to be held in South Africa Will come equipped with both petrol and diesel engine Official India launch by early 2024
Ending the long wait for a practical 5-door off-roader, Mahindra & Mahindra has confirmed to unviel the Thar 5-door on 15 August 2023. This new SUV will fulfil Mahindra’s custom of unveiling a new product every year on the Indian Independence day.
Since 2020, the brand has introduce a new product every year on 15th August. This includes the Thar 3-Door (2020), XUV700 (2021) and Born Electric Concept (2022). All these products have gone one to become super-seller for the company after launch.
For this year’s event, the company has selected South Africa as the venue. South Africa is one of the key export market for the Thar and Mahindra expects the new off-roader will enhance its presence in this region.
While the global unveil will take place on 15 August 2023, the Mahindra Thar 5-door is expected to go on sale in the country by early 2024.
The new Thar 5-door has been spied multiple times doing road test in India, but there has been no concrete information about the model. Essentially a long wheelbase version of the current Thar, the new model will come equipped with two extra doors and bench seats for the back row. Unlike the 4-seater Thar that is on sale currently, the new SUV could be offered with both 5- and 7-seater layout.
In terms of powertrain, the 2024 Thar 5-door will continue to come equipped with a 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine options as the Thar 3-door.
Once launched the new Thar 5-door will rival the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Jimny and the upcoming Force Gurkha 5-door.
