In the final month of the 2025-26 financial year, most of the Indian car manufacturers posted double digital sales growth. While Maruti Suzuki remains at the top, the battle for the second spot was won “handsomely” by Tata Motors.

Tata Motors has reported domestic passenger vehicle sales of 66,192 units in March 2026 as against 51,616 units in the same month last year. The company has reported a massive 28 per cent year-on-year sales growth. The total passenger vehicle sales, including international business, stool at 66,971 units in March 2026, that’s again 29 per cent YoY increase. In the same month last year, the company recorded a total sales of 51,872 units. The company exported 779 units last month, up from 256 units in March 2025.
The company sold a total of 9,494 electric vehicles, domestic + exports, in March 2026 compared to 5,353 units a year ago, registering a YoY growth of 77 percent.
In the last quarter of FY26, that’s January-March 2026, the company sold 1,98,743 vehicles in domestic market as against 1,46,127 units in Q4, FY25. The company’s total sales increased YoY by 36 per cent. In fact, the total passenger vehicle sales, including exports, grew by 37 per cent to 2,01,368 units during the Q4, FY26.
The last financial year, the homegrown automaker recorded a total sales of 6,41,587 units, registering a 15 per cent YoY sales growth. Its domestic sales were at 6,31,387 units, which is again a handsome jump of 14 per cent. The company sold 92,120 electric vehicles in FY26 as against 64,276 vehicles in the same period FY25.
Commenting on the sales performance, Shailesh Chandra, MD and CEO, TMPV, said, “For Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, FY26 has been a landmark year marked by multiple milestones. We achieved our highest ever annual sales volume of over 6.4 lakh units, delivering industry beating growth of 15 percent YoY.” He further said that the Nexon and Punch emerged as the highest-selling SUV models in the second half of FY26.
Mahindra has sold 60,272 SUVs in March 2026 in the domestic market as against 48.048 units in the same month last year, reporting a significant year-on-year sales growth of 25 per cent. The overall sales, including exports, were at 62,109 vehicles. The financial year concluded with all‑time‑high volumes of 6,60,276 SUVs and 2,89,597 LCVs (<3.5T), delivering robust YoY growth of 20% and 13%, respectively, across both segments.
According to Nalinikanth Gollagunta, CEO, Automotive Division, M&M Ltd., “The Financial year ended on a very positive note, with Mahindra clocking its highest-ever volumes in both SUVs & LCVs (<3.5T) segments, a significant milestone for the company. In March, we achieved SUV sales of 60,272 units, a growth of 25% and LCV <3.5T sales of 24,928 units, a growth of 11% YoY. Total vehicle sales stood at 99,969 units, a 21% YoY growth”
Hyundai sold a total of 2,08,275 vehicles, including domestic and exports, in the Q4, FY26 (January to March 2026 period), reporting a healthy YoY growth of 8.7 percent. This includes domestic Q4 sales of 1,66,578 units (+8.5% YoY) – HMIL’s highest-ever quarterly tally for domestic sales since inception and Q4 export contribution of 41,697 units (+9.4% YoY). HMIL also achieved total monthly sales of 69,004 units in March 2026, including domestic sales of 55,064 units and exports of 13,940 units. This marks HMIL’s highest-ever tally for domestic sales for the month of March since its inception.
Commenting on the sales results, Mr. Tarun Garg, MD & CEO - HMIL, said, “Continuing the momentum gained in 2026, we have achieved highest-ever quarterly domestic sales of 1,66,578 units in Q4 FY2025-26.
