Maruti Suzuki India Limited has played a significant role in shaping the Indian automotive industry. It has gained the trust of Indian consumers through its focus on affordability, reliability and customer satisfaction. In recent years, the company has worked towards introducing new technologies and cleaner propulsion methods on its models.
Among all its models, the Maruti Suzuki Swift is among the most popular with a cult following back in the day. In this story we are going to dig deep and understand the 18-year history of the Maruti Swift car in India:

Inspired by the Mini Coopers of the era, the Maruti Suzuki introduced the Swift hatchback in May 2005. The car was designed to offer a blend of style, performance, and fuel efficiency, targeting the younger generation of car buyers.
For the first time, the Indian auto market witnessed a massive waiting period of over 6 months for a specific model. According to data, the automaker registered 2,00,000 sales units in March 2008 and it continued increasing to 3,00,000 and 5,00,000 units in 2009 and 2010 respectively.
Since then, the Swift has been a consistent best-seller in its segments amassing over 2.5 million units in total sales. In order to maintain its popularity, the company has regularly updated the model and introduced 3 generations in the country.
Along the way, the company has also introduced some special edition models like the Windsong Edition for music lovers and the RS edition for those who wanted a sports touch.

In fact, the automaker is preparing to launch a fourth-generation car model which is expected to come in 2024.
Maruti Suzuki has consistently been the leading car manufacturer in India. It has established a vast sales and service network across the country, making its cars easily accessible to customers.
According to the sales report of May 2023, the total sales figure of Maruti Suzuki was recorded with 178,083 units. As stated by the automaker, the compact segment (Swift, Baleno, Dzire, WagonR, and Ignis) gained better sales which improved from 67,947 units in May 2022 to 71,419 units in May 2023. It is also said that Swift solely covered 17,346 units last month.
The yearly sales also increased to 1,46,354 units in the period of 2023-2024. While in FY 2022-2023, the company could only register 1,27,131 units.
