Hyundai Cars is reportedly developing a high-performance version of the Ioniq 5 EV. Likely to be called the Ioniq 5 N, the automaker has set 13 July 2023 as the date for the new models global unveiling. Currently the brand is testing its high-performance EV at Germany’s Nurburgring racetrack which has previously helped in development of many high-performance vehicles.
The South Korean automaker is yet to reveal the powertrain details of the Ioniq 5 N. However, the brand confirmed that it will get larger 400 mm disc brakes constructed of a lightweight material. Hyundai has also modified the braking regen system on the Ioniq 5 for better stopping power with 0.6G of max braking force.
Other changes on the Ioniq 5 N over the regular model include a updated cooling system featuring a new motor oil cooler, battery chiller and N-specific radiator packaging. Hyundai’s N Battery Preconditioning and N Race control software help in better heat management of the electric systems.
The former will get two modes, Drag and attack, and will optimize battery temperature accordingly. The N Race will also get two more modes, Sprint and Endurance, which manages the power delivery to limit temperature build-up.
In addition to the clever battery management system (BMS), the Ioniq 5 N will also be provided with an N Active Sound + setup that features 10 speakers, 8 internal and 2 external. Hyundai says these speakers will imitate the sound of a conventional internal combustion engine, EVs, and jet fighters via three sound themes named Ignition, Evolution, and Supersonic.
Hyundai's first high-performance EV will also get an N e-Shift that works alongside the N Active Sound + system. Together, it mimics an 8-speed DCT automatic gearbox by simulating a gearbox via controlling the torque output of the motor and the slight jerk between shifts.
Hyundai has been testing the Ioniq 5 N for over 10,000 kms over different climates and conditions. The automaker intends to test it for another 10,000 kms before it goes ahead for production. The Ioniq 5 is slated to be revealed globally on July 13 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, UK.
