Kia Motors is adding the Clavis, a new sub-4-meter SUV, to its lineup in India. The production version is likely to be called "Syros." This will be Kia's seventh model in India and will offer both petrol and electric power options. Its petrol version could be called the Kia Clavis, as this name has been trademarked in India. This new model will target buyers who want rear-seat space and comfort and will compete with other compact SUVs.
The Kia Clavis is expected to differentiate itself from the sister Sonet highly on comfort for occupants at the rear segment, for which it has significant scope. Like Maruti's Wagon R design, "Tall Boy," it makes the most of the available height, using plenty of space in the back seat to ensure that it cannot compare with the elder sibling Seltos.
Spy shots of the Clavis reveal just how vastly different it is from most Kia designs. The large grille features two rectangular LED headlights on the sides. It somewhat reminds one of how daytime running lights in the newly unveiled flagship electric SUV were formed. The clamshell-designed bonnet boasts an opening line positioned quite high up above the headlights as well.
At the rear, though rather heavily camouflaged, there are vertical taillights and a bumper-mounted licence plate. The boxy shape and tall structure lend it a very upright stance, which is not so different from Kia's Soul, the larger vehicle that's been sold overseas.
The Clavis will be full of features, especially at the higher trims. Inside, a 10.25-inch dual display system integrates digital instrumentation and infotainment, closely similar to that of the Seltos. A panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, climate control, and drive and traction modes are likely to be present. Sound quality will also be a priority, with a premium Bose audio system expected.
Kia has designed the Clavis with complete safety equipment. The more expensive variants are expected to have added ADAS, six airbags, a 360-degree camera, front and rear parking sensors, ABS, rear disc brakes, and a tire pressure monitoring system for the safety of every passenger.
The Clavis will come in 1.2-litre petrol and electric variants, similar to the Sonet, and would thus appeal to eco-conscious customers. It will come with a 5-speed manual and an AMT gearbox. This is also in line with the company's consistent commitment to green mobility solutions.
The Clavis is likely to cost a few rupees more than the Sonet. Estimated ex-showroom prices are likely to lie in the range of Rs. 8 lakh to Rs. 16 lakh. Competition will come in the compact SUV segment from Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, Mahindra XUV300, and electric versions.
