SUVs are selling like hotcakes in India. Buyers are spoiled with multiple choices in the segment available across different price ranges. The three-row or 7-seater SUVs are in high demand due to their practicality, space, comfort, and perceived safety. In the coming years, several new models will join the bandwagon from India’s leading OEMs, including Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Toyota, and Honda. Here’s a brief on the upcoming 7-seater SUVs from the aforementioned car manufacturers.
The upcoming 7-seater SUV from Maruti Suzuki will essentially be the three-row version of the Grand Vitara. Its market launch is likely to happen in mid-2025. This new model will use the same Global-C platform but will measure longer than its 5-seater sibling. It will be the brand’s first model to be produced at its new Kharkhoda manufacturing facility in Haryana. Besides sharing architecture, the new Maruti 7-seater SUV will borrow its powertrain from the Grand Vitara, which comes with Toyota’s 1.5L, 3-cylinder strong hybrid and mild hybrid options. It will surely have more cabin space than the Grand Vitara. The design and styling are likely to remain the same as its donor sibling.
India’s second-largest passenger vehicle maker, Hyundai Motor India, will drive in a new 7-seater SUV in the coming years. Codenamed Ni1i, this three-row SUV will be the first petrol-hybrid Hyundai in India and the first model to be produced at the brand’s Talegaon facility. At the same plant, the carmaker will manufacture the new-generation Venue subcompact SUV that’s due in 2025. The upcoming Hyundai 7-seater SUV might have a longer wheelbase than the Tucson. It is too early to comment on its powertrain, though the SUV is expected to share the 1.6L petrol hybrid setup with the global-spec Tucson. It could also be offered with the 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with strong hybrid technology.
Toyota has also planned to introduce a new three-row SUV, which will be the rebadged or re-engineered version of the Maruti Grand Vitara 7-seater SUV. However, Toyota’s SUV will have slightly different styling, featuring the brand’s familiar front grille, revised front and rear bumpers, and new alloy wheels. The interior layout and features will also be similar to the Grand Vitara-based 7-seater SUV. The upcoming Toyota Hyryder 7-seater SUV is expected to come with the 1.5L, 4-cylinder K15C mild hybrid petrol and the 1.5L, 3-cylinder strong hybrid petrol powertrain options. While the former delivers 103PS and 106.8Nm, the latter produces 116PS and 122Nm. Both manual and automatic gearboxes will be offered.
Honda Cars India plans to expand its SUV product portfolio in the coming years. The upcoming range will include five SUVs, including a sub-4-meter SUV, a three-row SUV, an electric SUV, and more. In the company’s product lineup, the new Honda 7-seater SUV will sit above the Elevate. This model will be designed and developed by Honda’s R&D centres in Japan and Thailand. As of now, details of the SUV are not available. However, media reports suggest that Honda might use the 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol engine from the Elevate. Rumours also indicate that the 7-seater SUV might get a strong hybrid powertrain in India.
