In the recent past, we have witnessed automakers like Tata Motors & Mahindra have introduced electric vehicles based on their ICE platforms. The platforms were modified to accommodate battery packs and electric motors. While Tata is selling the Nexon EV, Mahindra is selling the XUV400 electric SUV. Now, more automakers are following the same strategy to enter the EV segment. In this article, we talk about the upcoming SUVs to be offered with both ICE and electric derivatives.
Tata Motors is all set to introduce the much-awaited Curvv SUV Coupe in the Indian market. The company had showcased the near production model at the 2024 Bharat Mobility Show. This SUV Coupe will get both ICE and electric derivatives; however, the EV version will come first. The Tata Curvv EV is expected to be launched in the mid-2024, while the ICE Version is likely to be launched towards the end of this year. The EV will be based on Tata's Generation 2 EV architecture, called the Acti.ev platform. It is expected to receive a bigger battery pack compared to the Nexon EV, and is most likely to offer a range of up to 500km on a single charge. The ICE version is likely to be offered with two powertrain options - a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder turbo petrol and a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder turbo diesel.
Tata Motors had also showcased the electric derivative of the popular Harrier SUV at the 2024 Bharat Mobility Show. This electric SUV will be based on the new Acti.ev platform, which is compatible with different sized vehicles and can offer FWD, RWD and AWD layouts. Adding to it, the architecture supports both permanent magnet synchronous motors and induction motors. The Harrier EV is likely to come with dual-motor and AWD setup. It is expected to offer vehicle-to-load (V2L) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) charging capabilities. The Harrier EV is likely to feature a battery pack with a capacity of around 60kWh and an estimated range of 400km to 500km.
Similar to the C3 and eC3, the Citroen C3 Aircross will also receive an all-new electric derivative. The company has already started testing the electric SUV on the Indian roads. If reports are to be believed, the new e-SUV will be more feature-loaded and premium than the regular model. The SUV is expected to receive a bigger battery pack compared to the eC3 hatchback, which is fitted with a 29.2kWh battery pack. The eC3 Aircross is likely to offer a range of up to 400km on a single charge.
The Korean automaker, Kia, is preparing an all-new compact SUV, rumoured to be called the Clavis, that has been spotted testing multiple times on the Indian roads. To be positioned between the Sonet and the Seltos, the boxy-style SUV will be offered with both ICE and electric powertrains. The ICE version is likely to arrive in early 2025, while the electric derivative is expected by mid next year. The SUV is likely to be powered by a 1.0L turbocharged petrol engine with manual and dual-clutch automatic transmission. The EV is expected to get a battery pack of around 35kWh to 45kWh and a front-axle mounted electric motor. It is estimated to offer a range of up to 400-500km on a single charge.
The popular Hyundai Creta mid-sized SUV will soon receive an all-electric version in the Indian market. The new Hyundai Creta EV has already been caught testing multiple times on the Indian roads. It is likely to be unveiled by the end of this year or at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Show, while launch is expected by the end of this financial year - most probably by March 2024. It will rival the MG ZS EV and the upcoming Maruti eVX and the Tata Curvv. The EV could source its battery pack and electric motor from the global-spec Kona EV, which is fitted with a 45kWh battery pack and a front-axle-mounted electric motor. The new electric SUV is expected to deliver a range between 400km to 450km.
Honda Cars India has confirmed that the Elevate mid-sized SUV will get an electric derivative by 2026. It will be the part of the brand's 'ACE' (Asian Compact Electric) project, which is scheduled to be commenced by 2026. The electric SUV is likely to have up to 70 per cent localization, and will also be exported to select international markets. Codenamed DG9D, the electric SUV will be produced at Honda's Tapukara-based plant in Rajasthan.
