The Indian automobile industry saw a combination of performances during the month of February 2025 in which some of them performed well and others didn't. Maruti Suzuki was, as usual, leading but other industry players like Hyundai, Tata Motors, Mahindra, and Kia also showed their own good performance. A close look at India's 25 best-selling models last month is elaborated below in detail.
Maruti Suzuki dominated February 2025 with its cars in sales list. Its sub-compact SUV Maruti Suzuki Fronx was the top-selling car during the month with 21,461 units sold. It was a massive 51% surge from February 2024. Fronx surpassed some of the most popular cars like Swift, Baleno, and Wagon R that have been high-performing cars in previous months. In addition to the Taisor, the Fronx forced Maruti Suzuki sales over 25,000 units, and along with Baleno and Glanza sales, the figures over 45,000 units. This took the sale of these Maruti Suzuki models to the figure near the total sale of Tata Motors for the month in February.
Apart from the Fronx, the other Maruti Suzuki models also showed good performance. The Wagon R saw a minor increase in sales, with 19,879 units being sold, an increase of 2% over last year. The Swift saw an even larger 24% increase in sales, selling 16,269 units. The Baleno saw a 12% decrease in sales, selling 15,480 units. The Brezza, another best-selling SUV, saw a minor decrease of 2%, selling 15,392 units.
Hyundai Creta was India's top-selling mid-size SUV. Creta retailed 16,317 units in February 2025, up 7% from last year's sales. Creta is a top-selling SUV for many years, and good sales reflect that the car is extremely popular in the market even today. Hyundai's another top-selling SUV, Venue, also witnessed good sales of 10,125 units, up 13% from last year's sales.
Nonetheless, the new model from Hyundai, the Exter, failed to deliver. Sales of the Exter plummeted by 29%, selling only 5,361 units. Though the sales declined, the success of the Creta ensured that Hyundai remained in a strong position within the Indian market.
Tata Motors also posted satisfactory performance for the month, especially with the SUV segment. Tata Nexon, India's top-selling compact SUV, was the top-selling Tata car in February 2025. It posted 15,349 units, a 7% increase compared to last year. Tata Punch, another SUV model, made it to the top 10 list of top-selling cars, though there was a 21% drop in sales, selling 14,559 units.
The balance of the Tata line remained relatively strong. The Tata Tiago hatchback was level with sales at 6,954 units, slightly up from year ago. Tata Motors as a whole demonstrated that its lineup of SUVs continues to sell well in highly competitive Indian market.
Mahindra's February 2025 performance was uneven. The company's top-selling SUV, Mahindra Scorpio, fell by 10% at 13,618 units. Another top-seller, Mahindra Thar, also fell in sales by 14% at 9,248 units.
But there was a silver lining in Mahindra's black book. The new entrant from the SUV segment, the XUV 3XO, saw a phenomenal sales spurt at 7,861 units, an increase of 86%. This was a huge fillip for Mahindra, as it maintained its leadership in the SUV segment. The Mahindra Bolero also had a good show, though posting a fall in sales by 14%, selling 8,690 units.
Toyota's Feb 2025 was unnoticed with only one of its models finding a place in the top 25. Toyota Innova Crysta and Hycross, both MUVs, sold 8,449 units, recording no dramatic shift from last year. Even while Toyota had ramped up its model count in India by launching a string of new entrants such as Fortuner, Hilux, and Camry, their sales figures have not jumped manifold but remained at a plateau rate instead. Toyota needs to determine how it will be capable of creating market presence.
Kia Motors acted both negatively and positively in February 2025. Kia Sonet, which is a subcompact SUV, saw a fall in sales of 17% with 7,598 units sold. Sonet has been among Kia's top-selling vehicles, so that is not the best. Kia Seltos, a mid-size SUV, saw a moderate increase in sales with 6,446 units sold, up 3% from last year.
Kia's newcomer, Syros, was fine, and 5,425 units were sent out. Launch was fine to have some good grip for Kia in the low exposure of Sonet.
February 2025 was a mixed month of experiences for various car manufacturers in the Indian auto industry. The undisputed king was Maruti Suzuki with phenomenal sales of Fronx and others. Hyundai maintained its run good pace, with Creta driving SUV sales again. Tata Motors had strong SUV sales, and Mahindra used the XUV 3XO. Toyota, which only has the Innova and Hycross on the top 25 list, has some distance to travel before it can grow its market share. Kia reported a mixed bag, with Sonet dropping but Syros rising.
