Tata Motors has started development work of the next-gen Nexon compact SUV, which is reportedly to be launched sometime in 2027. It is expected that the Nexon EV will also enter the new generation; however, launch timeline is yet to be revealed. Previous reports reveal that the all new Tata Nexon EV could arrive in 2025 or 26; however, Tata Motors hasn't made any comments on the same.
First Launched in 2017, the current generation Tata Nexon has been a huge hit for the homegrown automaker. The sub-4 meter SUV received a comprehensive update on two occasions - in 2020 and in 2023. By 2027, the SUV will be 10 years old that's a log duration in auto lifecycle. In the auto industry, a product lifecycle is around 5-6 years.
Internally codenamed 'Garud', the new Tata Nexon is reportedly to be based on a heavily modified version of the existing X1 platform. The X1 platform is one of the oldest, as it is basically the upgraded version of the Indica's platform. The report claims that the platform is likely to receive massive structural updates.
We believe that the next-gen Tata Nexon could utilize the Curvv's ATLAS platform that is designed to accommodate vehicles measuring 3.9m to 4.6m in length. In fact, the new Tata Sierra ICE model could be based on the same architecture. This is a versatile platform that supports multiple bodystyles including hatchback, sedans, Coupe SUVs, and SUVs. Moreover, the new architecture accommodate multiple powertrain options. It also has an updated electric architecture with a cloud platform.
The next-gen Tata Nexon is likely to receive major exterior and interior design changes, which will be in line with newer Tata models. We believe that the new Nexon could receive modern features including LEVEL 2 ADAS.
It is expected that the next-gen Tata Nexon to come with petrol and CNG powertrains. It is early to comment whether Tata will add diesel engine with the new model, as the demand for diesel in sub-4 meter SUV category is on decline. The current 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine is compliant with BS6.2 emissions norms. This engine will require significant upgrade to meet the upcoming and more stringent BS7 emission norms, which will make it expensive.
