Tata Motors has confirmed that its much-anticipated Avinya EV lineup will now make its debut in 2027—two years later than originally expected. The update came during the launch of the Tata Harrier EV, where company officials shed light on the brand’s EV roadmap.
Initially revealed in 2022, the Tata Avinya concept promised a new direction for Tata’s EV journey, with plans to hit the market by 2025. That timeline has now shifted. Autocar says, the delay, confirmed by Vivek Srivatsa, Chief Commercial Officer at Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, marks a significant change in Tata’s future EV strategy.
According to Tata, the first Avinya model—codenamed P1—is currently in development and will now arrive in 2027. The P1 is expected to be a premium offering and could carry a starting price of over Rs 35 lakh.
The main reason behind the pushback is the delay in the local production plans of Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), Tata’s luxury arm. Tata had signed an MoU to use JLR’s EMA platform to support the Avinya models. However, since JLR’s Tamil Nadu facility is facing setbacks, Tata Motors is now exploring other options. These include a cost-effective version of the EMA platform or even sourcing a new EV architecture from outside its group companies.
Unlike Tata’s current electric models like the Nexon EV or the newly launched Harrier EV—which are based on internal combustion engine (ICE) platforms—the Avinya range will use Tata’s all-new Gen 3 skateboard platform. This “born-electric” base will offer several advantages:
- Flat floor design for more cabin space
- Better overall efficiency
- Radical, futuristic styling
The Avinya EVs are set to represent a new premium line-up in Tata’s growing electric portfolio. In fact, the Avinya range is expected to feature at least five models, internally named P1 to P5. One of these, believed to be the P4, was previewed at the 2024 Bharat Mobility Global Expo under the name Avinya X.
The first Avinya EV, the P1, will be manufactured at Tata’s Sanand plant. It aims to deliver not just a bold new design, but also advanced electric mobility in the Rs 35 lakh+ segment—making it Tata’s most premium offering yet.
