Toyota is going to upgrade its hottest-selling Fortuner SUV with a major revamp. It will be fitted with a new 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which offers improved performance and mileage efficiency with compatibility with ecological, carbon-neutral fuels. It is one of the measures taken by Toyota focusing on internal-combustion engine upgrades, though it remains compliant with the sustainability being seen in global momentum.
Under the bonnet will sit a fresh 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine delivering an interesting blend of power and economy. The new unit develops around 300hp and 400Nm of torque. That is well more than the outgoing 2.8-litre diesel unit, of course, which makes 204hp. That should make for an even more effective Fortuner both on and off the road.
According to Toyota, the new objective is not to change the vehicle to electric but to reduce carbon emissions drastically. By being more fuel-efficient, Toyota ensures that this new Fortuner will become a greener, more responsible choice to the market for buyers who are not ready for the shift to electric vehicles but would like to cut down on their environmental impact.
Not only will it be in the Fortuner, but also in the Toyota Hilux, the rugged sibling of this car, which is actually a pickup truck. To further the cause, this engine will also be used in Toyota's sports cars, such as the Toyota MR2 and Celica, with even higher versions generating up to 400hp and 549Nm of torque. Special output versions at 600hp are under development for competitive motorsports.
It is still unclear whether this 2.0-litre engine will be released for the current generation of Fortuner and Hilux. Considering the emission norms, it is likely that it will be coming in the next-generation variants slated to arrive in 2025. Through this, the next-gen Fortuner will continue to appeal as a performance and sustainable SUV.
Toyota hasn't yet said which of the Fortuner variants would come with this new engine. Speculations rise that it might first be used in the GR-Sport, of course, well known for the sportier, more performance-centric setup. In case this happens, the GR-Sport variant will become far more powerful and far more exciting to drive with the added horses.
The new turbocharged 2.0-litre engine has been designed to have higher power. Its compact size also ensures better efficiency, reducing fuel consumption in the current Fortuner and lowering emissions. Among other engines that Toyota is working on for this new family are a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated one and a turbo version of the same capacity. These new engines, though smaller than those already in existence, such as the 2.5-litre, will replace some of the bigger engines used by Toyota and offer better efficiency and power benefits.
The new series of engines for Toyota can easily accommodate carbon-neutral fuels such as ethanol, synthetic fuels, and liquid hydrogen. For this reason, Toyota is entitled to accommodate a wide range of fuel markets while they are working their way towards carbon neutrality at the same time. Most applications of these new engines are expected to come in hybrid powertrains, which combine the potency of traditional ICE engines with electric motors.
Toyota is actually in partnership with other Japanese car manufacturers, like Subaru and Mazda. This co-partnership means that they could actually share knowledge and accelerate the development of far more efficient and more powerful engines, efficient enough to meet the needs of modern car owners while dealing with environmental problems.
