The Indian automotive market witness a range of innovations every year. While some automakers introduce new cars, others expand their lineup with additional variants. At the same time, certain models were discontinued due to average performance and low sales, as seen with the Tata Sierra and Mahindra XUV500. The exciting news is that both of these iconic cars will make a comeback in India, with better visual appeal and powerful performance. Dive in for more insights!
Tata Sierra, the brand's most iconic car remained on sale for about 12 years in the Indian market. Unfortunately, it could not drive sufficient sales numbers from the Indian customers for which the brand had to discontinue the model in 2003.
Following its legacy, Tata is again bringing its Sierra to India and this time it will be more premium than ever. It is set to launch by the next year (2025). Its 3-door concept form was first showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo and then the 5-door concept appeared at the 2023 Auto Expo. With its unique design language and premium cabin feel, it caught many eyeballs.
Tata has also confirmed that the new Sierra will be available as an electric vehicle and will be based on the brand's Acti.ev platform that also underpins the Currv EV. The Sierra will also be offered with petrol and diesel choices as well. The ICE version will be developed on the brand’s new ATLAS architecture that underpins the Curvv ICE.
First introduced in 2011, the XUV 500 remained the favourite of many SUV enthusiasts. After serving for 10 years, the brand discontinued the model in 2021 as the XUV 700 SUV was launched as its successor in the same year. However, Mahindra stated that the discontinuation of the XUV 500 is temporary. It could come back! This sounds to be so true as the brand is working on the New-Gen XUV 500 which is set to arrive in the Indian market in the coming future.
The new XUV 500 will be positioned between XUV 3XO and XUV 700 SUVs. It could be built on the new FWD monocoque platform, which is designed to accommodate UVs measuring around which is expected to measure around 4.3-4.4 m in length.
The 5-seater SUV will be available with a 1.5-litre turbo diesel and a 1.2-litre direct injection turbo petrol engine. A new 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine could also be introduced with the launch of the new XUV 500.
