Launched last year, the Mahindra XUV700 is the spiritual successor to the XUV500. However, the name change also allowed the automaker to position the new model in a segment higher. This has led to a gap in their SUV portfolio as it does not have a direct competitor to the likes of the Hyundai Creta or Tata Harrier in the compact SUV segment.
This is why Mahindra and Mahindra is now believed to be working on bringing back the XUV500 nameplate for a smaller 5-seater mid-size SUV. The vehicle will be slotted below the XUV700 and recently launched Mahindra Scorpio N.
The first-generation XUV500 marked the start of a new era for Mahindra, becoming the first monocoque-framed, front-wheel drive SUV from the automaker. It also came with a number of segment first features. The new-generation model will look to follow its predecessor’s path of coming with cutting-edge and first-in-class features.
Pratap Bose, Mahindra’s Design Head, has shared a teaser image of the upcoming new XUV500. While it is too early to discuss styling, it is most likely to share design elements with the XUV300 and XUV700. Furthermore, the New XUV500’s design will be handled by the Mahindra Automotive Design Europe, which recently designed Mahindra’s Born Electric SUV Concepts.
It is expected that the company will most likely use a modified version of the Mahindra XUV300’s platform. The new SUV will have larger dimensions and a longer wheelbase than the former as it will sit one segment higher.
Just like the previous model, the XUV500 will come packed with features like a touchscreen infotainment display, digital instrument cluster, a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control, and more. The new SUV will also be fitted with safety equipment like 7 airbags, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX mounts, and ADAS tech.
As for the engine options, Next-Gen Mahindra XUV500 will be powered by a tweaked version of the XUV300’s 1.5-litre diesel motor that meets the upcoming BS6 Phase II Emission Norms. There will also be a 1.5-litre mStallion petrol engine as part of the package. Transmission choices will include both manual and automatic options.
Given that Mahindra is following the footsteps like Tata Motors of making electric versions of their ICE-powered models, it is likely the brand will offer an EV version of the Next-Gen XUV500 sometime after its ICE-models’ launch.
Upon launch, the Next-Gen Mahindra XUV500 will enter a highly competitive segment, taking on the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Škoda Kushaq, Volkswagen Taigun, MG Astor, Maruti Grand Vitara, and the Toyota Hyryder.
