Most Indian carmakers are ready to produce strong hybrid vehicles as demand for fuel-efficient and environment-friendly automobiles is increasing. The new hybrid car lineup from major players such as Maruti Suzuki, Toyota, Kia, Mahindra, and Hyundai will surely continue the further comeback in the automobile industry embracing cleaner and more efficient powertrains. These surely will make lots of difference with the launch of hybrid cars, which will eventually help save a lot of fuel and leave very little impact on the environment.
Let's deep dive into some very interesting concepts of hybrid models as follows:
The new version by Maruti Suzuki will be known as Fronx Facelift. The Fronx hybrid will come with a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder engine and will be coupled with an electric motor and a battery. This powertrain is called a series hybrid; the gasoline engine here acts as a generator, which recharges the battery while the electric motor drives the wheels. Fuel efficiency for the Fronx hybrid is expected to be over 30 kmpl. The hybrid variant will be costlier than the base variant of the petrol but cheaper than any other petrol variant of Maruti. Maruti is also planning to expand this hybrid technology in the future for some more models like Swift, Dzire, Baleno, and Brezza.
Additionally, Maruti will also introduce the 7-seater version of Grand Vitara by 2025. The new SUV is based on the Suzuki Global C platform, with a longer wheelbase designed to accommodate three rows of seats. It will be powered by a 1.5-litre, K15C petrol mild-hybrid, as well as a 1.5-litre Atkinson cycle strong hybrid engine. An over-25 kmpl fuel efficiency of the Grand Vitara 7-seater will makes it an absolutely great competitor amongst other 7-seater SUVs like Mahindra XUV700 and Tata Safari. The SUV will also boast of the presence of advanced ADAS and AWD, and thus premium, in the space.
The 7-seater version, Urban Cruiser Hyryder, is supposed to touch the markets sometime during 2025. A three-row edition is anticipated, as with the elongated wheelbase giving space over here for free positioning of a third row. It will compete with models such as the Hyundai Alcazar and MG Hector Plus. The 7-seater Hyryder will be offered with a 1.5-litre TNGA Atkinson Cycle petrol unit and is said to claim a mileage of 27.97 kmpl. It will be available with ADAS, and options will be there in both 6 and 7-seater versions. The hybrid powertrain will be the prime focus for Toyota in the model, as the company has been focusing only on that powertrain in the current version of Hyryder, so the new one is even more attractive to environmentally conscious buyers.
Kia will be launching the next generation of Seltos by the end of 2025. The model is going to come with a hybrid powertrain. It is going to have a similar size and shape but from the outside it will be reborn with fresh headlamps, grille, and other design elements. Interior features are expected to be the most modern tech with premium materials. They will sell a number of powertrain options, too, including a revised petrol-hybrid variant of Kia Seltos, which would be much fuel efficient and emit much less. Hybrid Seltos will directly compete with Hyundai Creta and Maruti Grand Vitara.
Mahindra is also developing a strong-hybrid powertrain for XUV 3XO. It is expected to hit the roads in 2026. It would be a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine and an electric motor. It is not only the hybrid, but Mahindra is also looking at range-extender hybrids for its electric vehicles, which include the BE 6 and XEV 9e. XUV 3XO is part of the efforts Mahindra is taking to introduce hybrid technology. Other car makers, like Toyota and Maruti, have already set the trend in this regard. This would be a fuel-efficient model of the XUV 3XO hybrid compared to its petrol and diesel variants.
Hyundai is also working on a new 7-seater hybrid SUV, codenamed Ni1i, which is likely to arrive by 2027. Hyundai will be its first hybrid model in India and it will get a 1.6-litre petrol-hybrid engine, which the company has already adopted in the international Hyundai Tucson. The Ni1i will be bigger than the Tucson, offering much more space than the third row for seats and competing with other variants like Mahindra XUV700 and Tata Safari. It will be making 50,000 units of the product annually, and SUV will be designed to offer more comfort and space compared to the Alcazar, which is currently the popular 7-seater in the Indian market.
